The air always contains dust. Therefore, over a long period of time, many dust particles following the air will stick to the air conditioning components and increase over time. According to electrical experts, on average, after each week of operation, the cooling capacity of the air conditioner will decrease by 1%.

At a certain stage, the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner will decrease significantly. That is, the machine still consumes electricity, even consuming more electricity than usual, but the cooling efficiency tends to decrease. In the long run, it also makes the machine easy to damage and shortens its life. Not to mention that bacteria and dirt stuck in the air conditioner for a long time will make the air in the room polluted. Risk of causing respiratory diseases for users.

Cleaning the air conditioner properly and at the right time will help protect the health of family members. Besides helping your air conditioner work longer, better.

Tools to prepare to clean central air conditioners

Before proceeding to clean the air conditioner at home, you need to prepare the following specialized tools:

  • Air conditioner cleaning pump.
  • Air conditioner cleaning bag.
  • Air conditioner cleaning spray.
  • Dedicated gas meter (if you want to check if the refrigerant gas is leaking or running low).
  • Some other cleaning tools such as air conditioner cleaning brush, cleaning cloth, screwdriver set, aluminum ladder, air conditioner cleaning solution.

Instructions on how to disassemble the central air conditioner for cleaning

Knowing how to disassemble the air conditioner so that you can clean it yourself at home will save you a lot of money. You won’t need to be a professional, nor will you need a lot of complicated machinery. The operation of dismantling and cleaning the air conditioner yourself will not be too difficult, you follow the instructions below.

Step 1: Learn about central air conditioning

The very first thing you need to do is to learn carefully about the structure and characteristics of the central air conditioner that you will disassemble and clean. This will help you manipulate faster, as well as limit mistakes. Just disassembling the device while reading the user manual only makes you waste a lot of time and also makes mistakes.

Note, depending on the model, the structure will be different. How to remove LG air conditioner, how to remove Mitsubishi air conditioner, how to remove Panasonic air conditioner or remove Samsung air conditioner will be a little different. But normally the indoor unit of the machine will include at least 2 dust filters. Some of the more advanced lines will have 2 extra nano and fine filters. Need to find out in the user manual the position of the filter screens to operate correctly.

Step 2: Turn off the power

For extra safety, you need to make sure you have disconnected the power to the air conditioner by turning off the circuit breaker or unplugging the air conditioner.

Step 3: Hang the dust bag

You hang a bag with a wide mouth under the air conditioner to catch water and dirt. This step is optional, for the purpose of keeping your room clean during and after the air conditioner cleaning process only.

Step 4: Remove the indoor unit cover

You proceed to remove the front cover of the indoor unit. Just use two hands to pull the bottom two corners upwards.

This cover is usually designed separately. The lid will have a hinge pin and a small ledge for opening and closing. You just need to pay attention to the observation that it can be opened easily.

Step 5: Remove the dust filter of the indoor unit

After removing the cover of the indoor unit, you will see that the 2 sides of the air conditioner will have 2 air filters. Below them there will be 2 more hooks. You use your hand to gently lift this hook to separate the 2 nets and bring them out.

As mentioned, some high-end models will have 1-2 more filters. You check to see if there is any filter in the machine, then take it out to clean it. For example: fine mesh filter, upper filter, etc.

Step 6: Clean the dust filter

At this point, gently use a sponge or soft cloth and clean the filters normally. In addition, you can combine more detergent to clean the filter mesh more clean. The operation should be done carefully and gently. When the dirt is clean, you dry it and let it dry. With the model with Nano filter, use a cotton swab to carefully clean the dirt.

Step 7: Clean the engine block, propeller

Other parts of the machine such as the engine block, the propeller, although less dusty, need to be cleaned and removed obstructions (if any). You can buy a spray bottle of Coil Cleaner and you spray it lightly in the gaps between the metal foil. Note to spray a moderate amount, do not wet the boards of the air conditioner.

Let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes and then wipe it off with a damp cloth. The dirt is then removed, helping your air conditioner become cleaner.

Step 8: Install the filters back into the central air conditioner

Before reinstalling the machine, make sure that the mesh panels are clean and dry. You put the filter mesh back into its old position in the same order as when you took it out before. Then close the lid of the machine.

Step 9: Clean the central air conditioner’s hot unit

Power off: Turn off the 240V power supply at the external power breaker box. You may have to short your hands or turn off the fuse. If you don’t see the power breaker box, you’ll have to blow out the breaker.

Clean the blades and nets: Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft and small brush head to clean. You may have to remove the protective metal plates to clean the inner mesh.

Check for weeds, litter, and other obstructions that may block airflow. The space required is 2 feet (61cm) with the heater.

+ Be careful not to damage the propellers or the protective metal plates. They can be bent easily.

Remove the grille above the air conditioner. The fan blades support the grille so you should avoid damaging the electrical connection. Clean the fan with a damp cloth

Check if your fan needs lubrication. Most fans do not require lubrication, but if necessary, you can add 5 drops of special oil for electrical appliances (such as WD-40), to avoid spilling oil on the inside.

Use water with moderate pressure to clean from the inside out.

Reassemble the parts in the correct position.

Disable A/C power, turn on the indoor thermostat from “Cool” to “Off”

Restart the machine: allow the current to stop working for 24h

Restart the A/C current: switch back to “Cool” and set the temperature. Wait for 10 minutes.

Check the operation of the machine. Check the pipes of the machine. One cool tube and one warm tube. If the temperature of the inlet and outlet pipes is not correct, you need to call a technician

Step 10: Final cleaning

The disassembly of the air conditioner for basic cleaning has been completed. Use a damp cloth to wipe it again and you’re done.

Step 11: Try restarting the machine

Finally, you plug back in or open the circuit breaker and restart the air conditioner. Now you can enjoy the cool and clean air coming from the air conditioner.

Notes when cleaning central air conditioners at home
